Intermodal Systems Page

Identifying and controlling unusual or suspect bags is a key element of the handling process.

Over the years, BDC Consultants have gained worldwide experience in Airport Baggage and Passenger Systems.

These include:

Security & Reconciliation Processes

  • Audit of existing security processes identifying potential "Hot Spots".
  • Definition of process improvements to UK DETR or other standards.
  • Integration of security processing with baggage and passengers.
  • Process documentation and staff training.

Case Study 1

London Gatwick Airport
As part of a major security review, BDC were requested to evaluate the existing security screening and baggage reconciliation processes in operation and to highlight potential areas of risk.

In close liaison with the UK's DETR, improved methods and processes were developed and integrated into an implementation plan.

BDC led the staff awareness and training process including the documentation of "best practice" for management procedures and work instructions, which were implemented to the internationally recognised ISO 9000 standard.

Case Study 2

Utilising the latest labelling/identity technology ensures that cargo and baggage is delivered in a timely and accurate manner.International Airport Terminals
BDC have been recently involved in assessing the capability of several International Terminals, which are presently operating to FAA security standards and advising on possible upgrades to bring these terminals to DETR 100% Hold Baggage Screening standards.

Intermodal Transport Processes

Integrated Rail/Air transport provides a convenient and alternate route to airports; BDC have been involved in a number of key issues including:-

  • Process integration of "Downtown" check-in.
  • Security screening and reconciliation integration.
  • Definition of operational responsibilities.

Case Study 1

Rail transport systems such as the Heathrow Express can provide a safer, more comfortable and cost-effective transport alternative, delivering passengers to their destination in a more timely and efficient manner.Heathrow Express (HEX)
During the initial concept of HEX, BDC were actively involved in developing the processes required for remote check-in, rail transport and in-feed to existing airport facilities. This also included security processing of passengers and baggage.

BDC generated the User Requirements Specification (URS), which accurately detailed the needs and requirements of the system to all parties.

Case Study 2

Gatwick Express (LGE)
BDC have recently been involved in defining process improvements at Victoria Station.

This has involved on site auditing of the existing control system logic, the existing process, analysis of bag and passenger flow and recommendations on the way forward.

The work is ongoing and BDC have been asked to prepare a User Requirements Specification detailing present and future aspirations for the system. This work is to include the airport terminal operations as well as all current aspects of the railhead operation.

Strategic System Evaluation

By combining a holistic overview, with detailed data analysis, BDC are able to:-

  • Audit existing systems, identifying process "Pinch Points".
  • Determine existing and future system capacity.
  • Evaluate system failure mode.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of proposed designs.

Case Study 1

London Heathrow
As part of a long-term technical support role, BDC is advising on the impact of baggage system changes in multiple terminals, driven by future schedule demands.

This work has involved the detailed blending, compilation and analysis of real bag, passenger and flight data captured by Airport Systems.

Review of this data lead to almost immediate improvements to the existing transfer operation and further modelling for future demand coupled with an overview of the existing system capacities showed key areas of process shortfall. These technologies have allowed proposed future changes/scenarios to be quickly and effectively evaluated.

In-depth systems analysis helps identify 'Pinch Points' within the handling process.
